Health Optimization for Surgical Recovery Program
The Health Optimization for Surgical Recovery Program is a comprehensive program designed to optimize cardiorespiratory, metabolic and immune health prior to and after surgery. It focuses on modulating inflammation and oxidative stress to improve wound healing, long-term functional and surgical outcomes.
Surgical Procedures
The program can be used with all surgical procedures, but it is designed specifically for major cancer and soft tissue surgical procedures. Examples include:
- Gastrointestinal and colorectal surgeries
- Breast cancer surgery including mastectomy and reconstruction
- Prostatectomy
- Head and neck cancer surgery
- Plastic and reconstructive surgical procedures
Our Approach
The program uses the principles of Health Optimization Medicine and Regenerative Medicine. It is highly data driven through objective measurement of cardiopulmonary fitness, metabolic and immune health.
Evidence informed changes in the “four pillars of health”—nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress and emotional health—are combined with targeted use of supplements and drugs.
Areas of Focus
The specific interventions will vary based upon the underlying disease, baseline cardiopulmonary fitness, and metabolic health. The areas of focus will include:
-
Surgical Planning: Determining the planned surgical procedure and anesthetic plan and collaborating with the surgical and anesthesia teams to develop a coordinated plan
-
Preoperative Assessment: Detailed preoperative assessment including a complete health history, laboratory panel, cardiopulmonary exercise testing and body composition analysis
-
Prehabilitation: Preoperative health optimization with individualized exercise, nutrition, sleep and stress optimization plans
-
Metabolic Optimization: Preoperative and postoperative metabolic optimization to address micronutrient and hormone deficiencies, improve metabolic flexibility and energy metabolism, modulate inflammation and oxidative stress, and improve wound healing
-
Rehabilitation: Postoperative health optimization with an adapted and progressive exercise program, adapted nutrition, sleep and stress optimization. Early postoperative functional rehabilitation including soft tissue mobilization and edema management
-
Regenerative Medicine: Optimizing wound healing and remodeling using the principles of regenerative medicine. This may include metabolic optimization, peptides to modulate inflammation, light and hyperbaric oxygen therapy
